Simplifying Healthy Eating: Embracing Balance and Joyful Nourishment

Aug 20, 2023

You want to get healthier, but which diet should you choose? It’s a topic that often leaves us scratching our heads and feeling overwhelmed! In a world full of conflicting diet advice and a mountain of products promising magical transformations, it's time to take a step back and bring simplicity, balance, and joy back to our plates.

When it comes down to it, nourishing our bodies and minds isn't that complex.

Breaking Free from the Dieting Chaos

Raise your hand if you've ever felt bombarded by endless diets and weight loss trends. It seems like everyone is selling their miracle solution, promising quick fixes and drastic results. Keto, low carb, Weight Watchers, Slimming World, Fast 800, Noom...But here's the truth: healthy eating shouldn't be about depriving yourself with extreme measures. It's about finding a sustainable and enjoyable relationship with food. Is it time for a social media clear out of those fad diet/before and after style accounts that make you feel like you're failing?

Embracing Individuality: There's No One-Size-Fits-All Approach

We are all unique beings with different needs, likes and dislikes, so it makes sense that a one-size-fits-all approach to diet doesn't exist. Instead of searching for the elusive "perfect diet," focus on listening to your body and trusting its cues - this can take practice, and signals can get mixed in with our emotions, find a dietician who can help you if you're struggling. Embrace foods that make you feel energised, satisfied, and nourished, and don't be hard on yourself when you indulge in foods that bring you joy - it's about balance.

Food Freedom: Rethinking the Good and Bad Labels

Honestly, 99% of the time, labelling foods as "good" or "bad" is not helpful, and creates a whole lot of unnecessary guilt and shame around eating - which only leads us to feel worse, and eat more. There are no inherently "bad" foods; each food provides varying amounts of nutrients and fuel to our body, it's about the overall balance and variety of what we consume. Eating a diet of only apples is as bad for you as eating only mars bars - neither is recommended!  When it comes to choosing a diet we need variety to give us the nutrients we need, and we need a bit of joy to stick at it!

Trans fats and ultra processed foods should be consumed in moderation, but when I see potatoes and berries are being labelled as “bad” - it's time to take a stand!  p.s. the only fuel our brains can use is carbs, so if you're cutting these and feeling a bit lethargic or unproductive, this might be why!

Navigating the Noise: Critical Thinking and Reliable Sources

In a world full of information (and misinformation), it's so important to use a critical mind. We've seen a rise in the influencer and celebs making money from brands, and it's always worth considering the motive of someone posting about a certain diet or supplement - is it money or your well-being they're interested in? Find reputable sources, registered dietitians or nutritionists, and be extra-cautious of quick-fix solutions that sound too good to be true. Your long-term health is a journey, not an overnight stop.

Let go of the noise and the pressure to conform to rigid diets. Instead, focus on finding balance, embracing individuality, and nourishing your body with a variety of wholesome foods that make you feel vibrant and satisfied.

Remember, healthy eating is not about perfection—it's about making choices that support your overall well-being - and still having room for pleasure and enjoyment. Let go of the guilt and shame, and practice self-compassion on this journey to nourish both your body and your soul.
